Thailand for first-timers: when to go and where to stay

Thailand is one of the easiest countries for a first long-haul trip: good hotels at fair prices, famous food, and a holiday for every taste.

When to go

  • November to February: dry and not too hot, the best time almost everywhere
  • March to May: the hottest months, but still fine for the beach
  • May to October: rainy season on Phuket and in Krabi, with lower prices; the showers are usually short

Koh Samui has its own calendar: its rainiest months are October to December.

Where to stay

  • Phuket: the most choice. Patong for nightlife, Kata and Karon for families, Kamala for a quieter holiday
  • Krabi: limestone cliffs and boat trips to the islands
  • Koh Samui: calmer, with smaller hotels and beautiful beaches
  • Pattaya: close to Bangkok and the cheapest option

Don't miss Bangkok

Spend two or three days in the capital before the beach: the Grand Palace, the temples of Wat Pho and Wat Arun, floating markets and street food.

Good to know

  • Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples
  • Check the current visa rules for your passport before booking
  • If you plan to ride a scooter, take travel insurance that covers it

Ask a ProTravel manager to combine Bangkok and the beach in one trip.
