Your first trip abroad: a step-by-step plan

Your first trip abroad can feel like a lot to organise. Break it into steps and it becomes simple.

Two or three months before

  • Choose the destination and the type of holiday: beach, city break or excursions
  • Check your passport: many countries require it to be valid for at least six months after your return
  • Find out whether you need a visa and how long it takes to get one

One or two months before

  • Book the tour, or the flight and hotel — booking early usually means better prices and more choice
  • Buy travel insurance that covers medical costs
  • Tell your bank you will use your card abroad

The week before

  • Check the flight time and your hotel voucher
  • Save copies of all documents on your phone and in your email
  • Pack using a list, and weigh your suitcase

On the day

Arrive at the airport early, keep your passport and tickets at hand, and have the phone number of your tour operator or travel agent. If anything goes wrong on the trip, that is the first call to make.

When you book with ProTravel, a manager guides you through every step — just ask.
