Why go

Montenegro packs dramatic mountains, fjord-like bays and charming old towns into a small stretch of the Adriatic coast. It is relaxed, green and easy to explore, with beaches and excursions only short drives apart.

Best time to go

The beach season runs from June to September. May and October are pleasant for sightseeing and hiking, with fewer visitors.

Highlights

  1. The Bay of Kotor and the walk up to the fortress above Kotor old town

  2. Perast and the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks

  3. The old town of Budva and the island of Sveti Stefan

  4. Lake Skadar, home to rare birds

  5. The Tara River Canyon and Durmitor National Park

Good to know

  • The currency is the euro, even though Montenegro is not in the EU.
  • Many beaches are pebbly, and sunbeds on organised beaches are paid.
  • Roads along the bay are narrow and winding, so excursions take longer than the map suggests.
